Do I "really" need therapy?
It can be challenging to start this journey. Oftentimes we may think that things aren’t that bad or that we can handle our struggles on our own. Some people may even worry about what others may think if they know you are coming to therapy.
Realistically, we all need support and only you know what you need. Deciding whether or not to start a therapy journey isn't about comparing your experience to anyone else's. Going to therapy can provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. A therapist can offer guidance and tools to help you better understand yourself and work through any challenges you may be facing. Early intervention can make all of the difference. It's never too late or too early to seek support.
Are sessions in person or online/virtual?
Both in person and online formats are available based on your comfort and individual needs. Some people prefer the comfort of being able to have a session from home while others want to be in a shared physical space with their therapist. Hybrid options are also available. Your comfort is key here.
Is the information we discuss private and confidential?
Confidentiality is essential when building a sense of safety and trust with your therapist. Therapists are professionally and ethically obligated to keep client information confidential and written consent is required to release information to others including physicians, family members, insurance companies, probation officers, etc. When working with children and adolescents, it is important that a developmentally appropriate level of privacy and confidentiality can be maintained. Parents will receive regular updates but some information discussed may be held back (barring any safety concerns) to give youth an opportunity to have a safe space in which they can speak openly.
There are three circumstances in which your therapist may disclose information without your consent:
What can I expect in my first session?
Your first therapy session will be 60mins in duration. You will be asked to fill in a basic registration form and review a consent form explained by your therapist. Following this, you will be asked a series of questions to gather information about your background, presenting concern, goals, strengths, and current coping strategies. A treatment plan will then be developed to address your goals and areas of concern. This first session is another opportunity to get a sense of how you and your therapist relate and can work together to achieve your goals. If you do happen to feel that your therapist isn't a fit at this time, there is no obligation to continue with further sessions. Referrals to other therapists can be provided.
How many sessions will I need and how often?
The number and frequency of therapy sessions required is individually based and will depend upon:
It is generally recommended to start with a higher frequency to build the therapeutic relationship and get a good start on your treatment goals. Frequency of sessions often decreases over time.
Are your services covered by insurance?
Psychotherapy services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance provider or employee benefit plan. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:
What are your rates?
What is your cancellation policy?
Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in the therapists' day that could have been offered to another client in need of support. As such, we require 24 hours notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment. Patients who provide less than 24 hours notice, or miss their appointment, will be charged a cancellation fee equating to the full cost of a session barring exceptional circumstances.
